On Saturday, November 9th, 2013 at approximately 1:25 a.m., Hamilton Police received a number of 911 calls regarding shots fired in the areas of Robins Ave and Cannon Street East and then at Kenilworth Ave North and Britannia Ave. Police responded and found the victim, James Louis Malone, 49-years of Hamilton suffering from a gunshot wound to the head.  The victim was located lying on the sidewalk outside of 225 Kenilworth Avenue North.

The victim was pronounced at the scene. A large area was sealed off by police with a number of scenes to be processed. Members from the Homicide Unit responded and have taken carriage of the investigation.  Divisional Detectives, Forensic Services, Collision Reconstruction, ACTION and front-line officers remained in the area canvassing and interviewing witnesses.

There were 3 main areas of forensic interest to police.

The first area of interest is Robins Ave and Cannon Street where the initial interaction took place between Mr. Malone and a white, male carrying a shotgun. This resulted in a shotgun blast hitting the front door of 35 Robins Ave. This residence has no connection to Mr. Malone, who happened to be walking his 2 dogs at the time.  Mr. Malone fled eastbound on Cannon St while being pursued by the gunman and another white male driving a grey, Dodge Ram pick-up truck.

The second area of interest occurred at the northwest corner of Britannia Ave and Kenilworth where witnesses reported further shots being fired at Mr. Malone.

The third scene was outside of 225 Kenilworth Ave North where two store windows were shot out.  It was at this location that Mr. Malone had his final interaction with the gunman. This resulted in the victim being shot at close range.

The Dodge Ram pick-up then went southbound on Kenilworth Avenue and turned westbound onto Britannia Ave.

A number of key witnesses have provided valuable information to investigators and several local businesses have provided surveillance footage of the area which investigators are continuing to review.

Mr. Malone was an ex-member of the Hell’s Angels outlaw motorcycle gang, was well known to the police.

Investigators are in the process of interviewing friends and associates of Mr. Malone to obtain as much detail about his background and to determine the motive for this violent murder.

Police are also interested in tracing Mr. Malone’s whereabouts, and who he was associating with, in the hours preceding his death. It is believed he was socializing in at least one east end establishment where there may have been a verbal altercation between Mr. Malone and a female patron.
