While the deep freeze has clutched almost entire Canada, more than thousands of passengers are left grounded at Pearson International Airport. The extremely cold weather has made a serious impact on air travel, partially due to the backlog caused by hundreds of flight cancellations on Tuesday.

Later on early Wednesday morning, the airport confirmed to have had more than 230 cancellations of flights that were due to arrive and 165 flights that were scheduled to depart. An estimate of more than 600 flights was cancelled during a "ground stop" on Tuesday morning, when the temperature felt like -40 C with wind chill. An airport official has revealed that though the airport is now "fully open and operational," airlines are still being encouraged to reduce their operations until they catch up to the missed flights that caused the backlog. According to a representative of the Greater Toronto Airports Authority, Shereen Daghstani , "there have been adjustments to the schedules which resulted in a 50 per cent reduction." It was added that "this could mean cancellations or delays," as "we know that the airlines are working to rebook a significant number of passengers who have missed or cancelled flights.”

Pearson International Airport is filled with long squirrelling line of passengers that are waiting for hours to rebook flights, get hotel vouchers and claim luggage overnight. Moreover, officials believe that the jam at Pearson has created a ripple effect across the country, resulting in cancellations and delays in several cities including Halifax, Ottawa, and Montreal.
