The Royal Air Force (RAF) has launched probe into the disturbing leaked images that show at least one and possibly two British military personnel posing in a thumbs up sign with a dead Taliban fighter in Afghanistan.

The pictures show a part of the damage caused after an attack by insurgents on Camp Bastion in September 2012 in Afghanistan. The Members of No 51 Squadron RAF Regiment n co-ordination with U.S. Marine service personnel and civilian security contractors defeated the attackers in a four-hour fire-fight which resulted in the death of two U.S. Marines, injured several British personnel and destroyed six U.S. Harrier jets.

An RAF spokeswoman has said: “Inappropriate actions will not be tolerated in the armed forces – the RAF is treating this incident extremely seriously and has launched a Military Police investigation.

“As this incident is subject to an on-going investigation it would be inappropriate to comment further at this time.”

She has further added: RAF had a “zero-tolerance policy on the mistreatment of deceased enemy personnel” and this case was being treated “extremely seriously”.

The photos were initially appeared on website Live Leak. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) have told it had come to their attention last month and military police were investigating the matter.

Two RAF Regiment members have already been withdrawn from frontline duties over the leaked photographs.
