i hope everyone is well and enjoying the spring. while the weather has been a bit tricky, it’s amazing how lush things are growing and how vibrant and colourful!!! i’m having a great time pruning and a challenging time weeding and cleaning up after what the winter killed – two rose bushes, three butterfly bushes and various smaller flowers and plants. but i guess this is all part of the process!!!!
anyway, i wanted to advise you about the next ‘wind in the leaves collective’ show which will be on saturday june 28th from 8-9:30 p.m.
as for the show itself, the eventbrite page provides a description of ‘Gata’ and the group that will be performing it. in brief, it’s an operatic excerpt performed in various yoga positions. i’ve had a chance to see some of it and am honoured to have this group perform with the ‘collective’ that night.
the ‘collective’ will feature py poetry with dancers miranda liverpool, mikhail morris and kevin a. ormsby. we will perform ‘a piece of twisted steel’. these are a series of poems based on my family and our journey through immigration, loss, death, the impact of racism, memory and grief. the music we use includes composers duke ellington, arvo part, keith jarret, david ware, meredith monk and corona. the poems and performances weave in and out of my memories of birth, the passing of my brothers, my father and mother, and the memory of my remaining siblings and how they have come to terms with these changes in their lives.
‘a piece of twisted steel’ is a riveting set of work. we’ve performed some of these pieces in other events and have been piecing this together for almost 4 years now. while not the full production, this 30 minute performance promises to move you. deeply.
i look forward to seeing you on june 28th and stay tuned for our next performance in early october!!
