Ontarians celebrated National Aboriginal Day across the province on Saturday. Meanwhile, Toronto kick started the 20th annual National Aboriginal Day on Saturday morning with a sunrise ceremony and flag raising at the Toronto City Hall podium roof. On the other hand, organizers of the celebrations in Timmins said they are expecting one of the largest crowds in years for the celebration at Hollinger Park.

In addition to that, six organizations in Brantford have collaborated to celebrate National Aboriginal Day together. According to a statement issued by the manager of community programs with Brantford Native Housing, Sherry Lewis, “this is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate (the fact) that we live next door to the largest First Nation in Canada, as well as coming together with the growing aboriginal community living in the city and the county.” According to a statement issued by the Canadian Race Relations Foundation chairperson, Albert Lo said, “these separate nations and peoples have been crucial to the settlement and development of this great country and will continue to be so in the future. This day can serve as a positive re-introduction to that history and those cultures and we encourage all to participate in their local Aboriginal Day activities.”

A statement issued on Saturday by the minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development, Bernard Valcourt, said that “today, let’s honour Aboriginal peoples and the vital role they have played and continue to play in shaping our great country.”
