This Tuesday night the Pakistan International Airlines flight to Peshawar was attacked with gun shots as it landed on the airport. One woman died whereas three crew members were injured during the attack. The Taliban had been planning to aim at the fuel tank to blow the plane as well as the cockpit to kill the pilot.

“It would have been a disaster had they hit the fuel tank or cockpit,” said a senior Pakistan International Airlines official, who declined to be named because he was not authorized to discuss the matter with the Press. International airlines have started to reconsider taking flights to different areas of Pakistan where the insurgency related to the militants is on its peak. The Civil Aviation Authority said all flights were suspended after the latest attack, but domestic flights resumed operations on Wednesday. International flights remained suspended. “After last night’s attack, I don’t think international airlines would take the risk to come to Peshawar,” said a senior CAA official who spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter.

This is the third incident related to airports in Pakistan, first being the attack at the Jinnah airport in Karachi where ten militants belonging to Uzbekistan attacked planes as well as the people there. The Chief Minister Pervez Khattak this Wednesday announced compensation under Shaheed package for the victims of firing incident on Peshawar-bound PIA flight.
