American Museum of Ceramic Art (Pomona, CA)
The mud, sweat and tears of wood-firing potters come to the screen in Out of the Fire, an absorbing documentary examining the lives of two fascinating artists. The film follows potter Kevin Crowe and his apprentice Krista Loomans as they use an enormous wood-burning kiln and ancient, labor-intensive techniques to create works of stunning beauty and texture. A suspenseful narrative unfolds as the duo struggles to complete more than 2,000 pots over one four-day kiln-firing, thereby shoring up their inventory for the next six months. Along the way, Out of the Fire becomes both a fascinating examination of a most unusual creative process and an ode to the passion and risk required to live the life of an artist. The film’s director Courtenay Singer will be on hand following the screening to take questions from the audience.
