Manitoba has announced to fund flood-prone municipalities around large water bodies to boost flood protection. According to the provincial government, it will fund flood protection projects in five Rural Municipalities. The announcement was made in Gimli by Manitoba Premier, Greg Selinger, where he promised to help road access to Willow Island. The province has vowed to pay up to 90 per cent of the cost of improving the access road, i.e. up to $300,000.
The plan also encompasses projects to protect several beaches around the province. The plan suggests the RM of St. Clements to get help with diking efforts at Patricia Beach. The province announced to fund 90 per cent of that project, i.e. up to $800,000. Mayor Steve Strang, RM of St. Clements mentioned in a press release that “the proactive approach taken by our provincial government in protecting our communities from flooding now and into the future will in the long-run show great savings for all Manitobans.”
On the other hand, Albert Beach in the RM of Victoria Beach has planned to install new upgraded flood protection measures, which will cost up to a maximum of $300,000. Meanwhile, flood protection work at Pebble Beach, which started in 2005, is anticipated to receive additional funding to speed up completion. Whereas, The Village of Riverton will get funding to improve a community dike near a narrow channel on the Icelandic River. The money for the flood fighting measures comes from the province’s Building Manitoba Fund.
