University of Waterloo has announced to have cancelled all its frosh events on campus in light of the very unfortunate death of an 18-year-old Markham woman, an engineering student, who was struck and killed by lightning from a sudden, 30-minute rainstorm. The announcement was made by the university on social media, where it also warned all students to remain indoors a short while after death, i.e. around 9 a.m. in the morning.

It was later revealed that the engineering student was struck on a pathway leading to the area of residences on campus known as Student Village 1. The university officials mentioned in a prepared statement that “our thoughts remain with the family and friends of the student at this most difficult of times,” adding that they are trying to contact her next of kin. Meanwhile, police communications officer, Olaf Heinzel, alleged that the storm had arrived hours before it was forecast. It was highlighted that “it was a sudden storm. It rolled in heavy,” and “it wasn’t predicted. It was supposed to come tonight.”

Meanwhile, there was an outburst of grief from fellow students on Facebook after the news of the girl’s death was made public, as one student, David Xu, stated that “I can’t imagine something so unfortunate to happen to a first year during orientation week, which is probably the most exciting time in a university student’s career. Rest in peace.” Police, coroner’s office and Ministry of Labour are all investigating the incident.
