NDP deputy leader, Megan Leslie, mentioned in a statement issued on Friday that the Liberals could have found a better way to handle allegations of personal misconduct. According to Leslie, even if it created greater mystery around what happened, suspending the two MPs was not a good decision.
During a telephone interview, Leslie explained that “that’s not a coverup. That’s listening to these women and making sure they have a safe work environment.” Leslie alleged that New Democrats do not support how the Liberal Leader, Justin Trudeau, announced on Wednesday to have suspended two MPs, namely Scott Andrews and Massimo Pacetti, from caucus over reports of alleged “personal misconduct” against two NDP MPs. It was highlighted that both Andrews and Pacetti have denied the allegations and expressed confidence they will be exonerated.
According to undisclosed sources, NDP was dealing with the separate situations internally, until one of the women shared her allegations with Trudeau on Oct. 28 while travelling together following the funeral for Cpl. Nathan Cirillo in Hamilton. NDP was not aware of the MPs plan to inform Trudeau and that it was also done without the knowledge of the second woman, who had explicitly told NDP Whip Nycole Turmel and others that she did not want to file a complaint. Whereas on the other hand, Trudeau have alleged that there was no other choice but to suspend Andrews and Pacetti from caucus, with Liberal whip Judy Foote asking Commons Speaker Andrew Scheer to intervene.
