A new poll conducted by Insights West has alleged that incumbent Mayor of Vancouver, Gregor Robertson, and his challenger, Kirk LaPointe, are neck-and-neck almost a week before the upcoming mayoral election. According to the poll conducted from Thursday to Saturday, Non-Partisan Association candidate LaPointe trails very close behind Vision Vancouver’s Robertson among decided voters, i.e. 41 and 46 per cent respectively.
However, pollster Mario Canseco remarked that the race is far from over since both parties have a window to gain a considerable lead by winning the 27 per cent of intended voters still sitting on the fence before Saturday’s vote. Canseco stated that “the two main contenders in Vancouver’s mayoral race are doing a good job rekindling with the traditional constituencies of their parties.” It was added that “the final week of campaigning provides an opportunity to attract the votes of the more than one-in-four Vancouverites who are still pondering their options.” Whereas on the other hand, Cope mayoral candidate Meena Wong enjoys support of nine per cent of decided voters in the poll.
The survey reported that among those surveyed, majority thought Robertson was the best candidate to handle issues of housing, poverty, the environment, and transportation. Whereas on the other hand, LaPointe was considered the favorite candidate to deal with city finances and taxation, economic development, and crime. Canseco highlighted that “housing continues to be the foremost concern for most residents, and Mayor Robertson is regarded as the best person to handle that file,” adding that “however, LaPointe has made great strides during the campaign to connect on economic issues, and is now seen as an optimal financial manager.”
