Buoyed by a passionate Puccini-esque score by Daniel Catan (2010’s opera Il Postino), Florencia En El Amazonas follows a famed opera singer as she sets off on an enchanted riverboat in search of her long-lost love. But as the journey turns stormy, her fellow travelers are lured deeper and deeper into the rain forest by a mystical river creature. Channeling the magical realism of Gabriel García Márquez, Nobel Prize-winning author of Love in the Time of Cholera and One Hundred Years of Solitude, this lush LA Opera production is performed in Spanish with projected English translation, and stars Chilean soprano Verónica Villarroel and up-and-coming soprano Lisette Oropesa.
