Rotterdam Philharmonic: Prokofiev's Symphony No. 5 and Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5

Written in the summer of 1944 in the Soviet Union, Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 5 has come to symbolize victory over Nazi Germany in World War II. It was the composer’s first symphony in 14 years, and its soaring, triumphant themes made it an instant hit at its American premiere the next year, landing Prokofiev on the cover of Time magazine. The Rotterdam Philharmonic will perform the work at the Valley Performing Arts Center along with Tchaikovsky’s own Symphony No. 5, whose structure has been compared to yet another Symphony No. 5: that of Beethoven.
