Aratani Theatre (Los Angeles, CA)
Vibrant, frenetic and brimming with percussion, cumbia music has caught fire in Los Angeles. World music DJ Betto Arcos has been one of the genre’s biggest boosters, sending the African-influenced Latin rhythms across the airwaves via NPR, American Public Radio and his “Global Village” show on KPFK. Popular throughout the Americas, cumbia originated in Columbia’s Caribbean region and is often considered a precursor to salsa. An expression of African diasporic roots, its rhythms can be traced to the Yoruba of Nigeria. East L.A. and Boyle Heights are experiencing their own renaissance of emerging cumbia bands, and Betto has tapped some of those acts for the L.A. Cumbia Festival. Part of Aratani Theatre’s World Series, the festival will feature Viento Callejero, La Chamba, Buyepongo and Eduardo Martinez y Su Palo Cuero, all celebrating the rhythms, history and dances of this cross-cultural genre.
