There is only one rule of makeup, which is that there are none. Foundation diehard? Allow us to direct you to our favorite ones. More the fiercely fresh-faced type? Here's the skin-care routine that will make you glow. We don't subscribe to the narrative that either one is better, or braver, than the other.
That said, we've noticed an uptick in celebrities who have been jumping on the no-makeup train — led by the patron saint of cosmetics-free complexions, Alicia Keys. But that's not to say all of Hollywood is kicking its eyeshadows to the curb. Plenty of celebs still sport bold beauty looks on occasion, and also have their moments of free-facing it. Not only does it keep us guessing, it also shows us all the ways we can use makeup to enhance or highlight our features.
Ahead, check out some of our favorite celebs with and without makeup. It's not brave, it's not a reason to gossip, it's not revolutionary — it's just makeup.
The star has become the queen of the makeup-free selfie on her Instagram. That's why it's no surprise she was comfortable enough to grace PEOPLE 's 2019 Beautiful Issue with zero makeup. “For the most part, I feel most like myself without makeup,” she told the magazine. "I’ve made peace with: This is my face, and I’m okay with it. It does all right by me.”
The actress always has enviable makeup looks on the red carpet. And Garner recently let us in on her secret: She keeps cosmetics in her kitchen, so it's easily accessible when she's quickly doing her kids' hair in the morning. Genius.

But the cover star of PEOPLE 's 2019 Beautiful Issue is also comfortable going au naturel with makeup-free selfies that make it hard to believe 13 Going On 30 was 15 years ago.
Natural glam is Ciara's thing. The singer rarely hits the carpet without her skin bronzed and highlighted. You can also catch her with the occasional bold lip color, like this fiery red hue.

Ciara is equally stunning barefaced. In a recent Instagram selfie, she shared her naturally feathered eyebrows and foundation-free skin. "No makeup. No extensions. Vulnerable. My Beauty Marks and all. The real me… and I love it. Finally embracing myself fully! It feels good," she wrote in the caption.
Chopra doesn't just know how to throw lavish wedding parties: She's also the reigning queen of monochrome makeup, polished hair, and summery lip shades.

But when it comes to vacationing with her new hubby, she's more than willing to trade her full face in for a fresh canvas. As much as we love a good coral lip, her makeup-free side is just as gorgeous.
Makeup is a pretty big deal in the Kardashian-Jenner family — just look at KKW Beauty and Kylie Cosmetics. You rarely catch the momager of the family without her signature dark eyeliner and glossy lips.

But sometimes it's just too early for full glam. Snapping a photo from the styling chair, Jenner showed off her "I woke up like this." Now we want to know all the secrets to having a plump, rosy complexion straight out of bed.
There are a lot of celebrities who love makeup, but Lady Gaga truly loves makeup. Her fearless approach to beauty is exactly why people will be camping outside for hours when her Haus Beauty collection finally drops.

Since we're used to seeing Gaga in layers of cosmetics, a sighting of her bare face is all the more shocking. Just in case you're wondering exactly how Gaga got so bronzed and pore-less, you can credit two things: a vacation to Mexico and dark-spot serum.
Throughout her singing career, Kesha has made a name for herself as a boundary-pushing beauty icon (especially when it comes to glitter. Kesha loves glitter).

Underneath all that shimmer, Kesha has the prettiest set of freckles, which she's vowed to embrace in 2019. "This year my resolution is to love myself… just as I am, all fucked up and imperfect and whatever else," she wrote on Instagram. "And to let my freckles liiiiiiiive." Amen.
More often than not, Rashida Jones keeps her makeup simple on the red carpet, choosing to wear beauty staples like a smoky eye, a light swipe of pink lipstick, and a sheer foundation that allows her freckles to peek through.
Makeup-free, those freckles are more glorious than ever, as she showed fans in a recent sun-soaked selfie.
As the founder of one of the most innovative beauty brands ever, it's no surprise Rihanna rocks graphic white liner like a total pro.

But that doesn't mean she won't strip away the lashes and liner on her day off. Sure, her motto is "more is more," but for now, less is looking pretty damn good, too.
