Times readers Get FREE $30 to spend on Amazon, Walmart…3 prolific filmmakers Anurag Kashyap, Sudhir Mishra and Chakri Toleti have joined hands to launch LargeShortFilms.com, a platform to encourage new talent to make short 10 minute films with the same intensity and grandeur of a feature film. In this digital world, these films can be viewed in a jiffy on computers and mobile phones, even while you are on the go.
The question is why are these big ticket directors giving their precious time to collaborate and create something that only aspiring filmmakers do? Because the way we consume entertainment is changing today with audience having very little time and very little patience. Royal Stag Mega Movies is the brand putting in the money behind this venture which has no direct impact on their brand equity. Both the brand and the directors want to create the future of entertainment. Apart from this futuristic mode of entertainment, they have agreed that potential talent needs to be nurtured. Young filmmakers who make short films are ignored. But now when they will share the platform (LargeShortFilms.com) with the big directors, then the world will take notice. The seniors will lead by example, mentor, and enthuse the youngsters to make and watch short films.
One of the first short films in this project is The Last Act made by 12 filmmakers from 12
cities who were shortlisted from 500 entries by Anurag Kashyap, Sudhir Mishra and Chakri Toleti. These 12 directors were given concepts to make a 10 minute long film. The initial plot of the film was written by Anurag Kashyap however the 12 directors have done the rest of the film. Interestingly, these 12 stories are not short stories but 12 parts of the same feature film. The film is the story of a psychopath killer who commits a crime and leaves 12 different clues around the body for the police to solve the crime. These clues are left in 12 different cities and the police have to find the evidence before they can finally the answer to the crime. The 12 directors were asked to make a film each surrounding the clue left in 12 different cities in the country. The narrative surrounding the 12 clues and the 12 short stories made by 12 directors come together to clear the mystery and reveal the identity of the dead man.
What is fascinating about the whole concept is that though the 12 directors have made the 12 films which are then intertwined to make a feature film but these 12 directors have not met each other or spoken to each other even once.
One of the directors Asmit Pathare, who was appointed as a project director, says "We have made 12 segments and woven it into a story. I made the prologue which comes in the beginning of the film and an epilogue which sums up the entire film. In between are the 11 segments which start solving the mystery." The debutant director says "I am excited since this is the first feature film for all of us. It's a big thing for independent filmmakers."
Another director Nitin Bhardwaj, who is also a part of The Last Act, adds, "It was challenging to make a short film and the challenges were much greater as I shot the film in a small town. I appreciate Anurag Kashyap for giving us the opportunity to be a part of this project. What's more, none of the 12 directors who have made the films know each other or have spoken to each other. Yet for the 12 stories to come together and merge it into a complete feature film was a fantastic idea. We are really in the dark as to what each of us have done and it's going to be very exciting when we meet each other on the release of the film."
Unlike other short film projects, LargeShortFilms.com will be a continuous project and will not end with just a few short films. The team behind this project we will continue to excite big names in films to come forth and join the team to make large short films. And they are confident that we will inspire a whole generation of promising filmmakers and enthusiasts to join the revolution and change the face of Indian cinema.
