Father of recently slain Toronto teacher, 31-year-old Abshir Hassan, held a prayer service on Friday that was attend by almost 1,700 people. Hassan was victim in a Lawrence Heights triple shooting earlier this week, while the other young couple received serious injuries and still remain in the hospital. According to the police, Hassan and the couple were shot multiple times outside a low-rise apartment building at 11 Flemington Rd., near Lawrence Avenue West and the Allen Road on early Tuesday morning.

It was later explained that Hassan was attending a friend’s birthday party and only left the building to move his vehicle when he was shot. Police confirmed that all victims were innocent, though it has yet to determine what motivated the shooters. Before the prayer service, Hassan’s father Ahmed alleged that “Abshir is somebody who gave up his life for people in need. He put all these people ahead of his life.” He alleged that “we have lost a giant person. A person who was trying to make a change,” adding that “he was the shining light of the family.”

The prayer service in honor of Hassan was held on Friday afternoon at the Khalid Bin Al-Walid Mosque on Bethridge Road, near Kipling and Rexdale Boulevard, following by a community gathering from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Lawrence Heights Community Centre. Later on, Hassan’s father thanked the public for its outpouring support and announced that the family has decided to set up a trust fund and money raised will go towards setting up a scholarship for at-risk youth in his son’s honor.
