21-year-old Canadian defeats Harrison to reach fourth career ATP World Tour title match
Milos Raonic (Thornhill, ON) advanced to his fourth career ATP World Tour final and second straight in San Jose on Saturday thanks to a 7-6(4), 6-2 victory over 19-year-old American Ryan Harrison in the semifinals.
Raonic, who earned his maiden ATP World Tour title in San Jose last year, was once again dominant on serve against Harrison. He hit 20 aces, maintained a 77 percent first serve percentage and won 84 percent of his first serve points. Raonic maintained his perfect tiebreak record in San Jose (7-0) when he won the opening set and broke the match open in the second frame by breaking Harrison’s serve twice. He converted his third match point opportunity with an inside out forehand winner.
Raonic becomes the first player to reach two ATP World Tour finals in 2012 after winning his second career title in Chennai during the first week of the season. He is looking to become the first repeat winner in San Jose since Andy Murray accomplished the feat in 2006 and 2007.
In Sunday’s final, which is scheduled for 3 p.m. local time and 6 p.m. Eastern time, Raonic will meet the winner of Saturday’s second semifinal between fifth-seeded Julien Benneteau of France, whom Raonic beat last week at Davis Cup by BNP Paribas, and Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan.
