Tropiclia was one of the most important global manifestations of youth culture during the 1960s. Inspired by a combination of art, music and cultural theory, a group of young singers from the north-eastern Brazilian province of Bahia briefly turned the countrys music scene upside down. Led by Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Gal Costa and Os Mutantes, the musical expression of the cultural cannibalism that was Tropiclia absorbed folkloric Brazilian sounds, musique concrete, pop and rock tropes and absurdist song constructions to create not so much a sound as a point of view on Brazils identity and place in the world. Perhaps then Toronto guitarist David Arcus is a latter-day Rogerio Duprat, who arranged many of the classic Tropicalia albums. Arcus received a degree in Composition from the University Of Toronto in 2005. He has long been a participant in Brazilian arts organization Uma Nota where he arranges for Brazilian drummers, horns and electric instruments. Most recently he was the musical director of Aline Morales debut album, the Juno-nominated “Flores Tambores E Amores”. Arcus will lead an eleven piece band through arrangements for Uma Nota and reinterpretations of Tropicalia and MPB (Musica Popular Brasilera) from the sixties and seventies. Bernice is the project of Robin Dann, Thom Gill and Colin Fisher. Their music evokes comparisons to Mary Margaret OHara and Maria Bethnia to fits well with the experimental spirit of Tropicalia. Bernice’s music has been described as “a short soul symphony” in the Globe and Mail. Jeff Garcia aka Mango Peeler was the spiritual guide of Halo Halo Village. His colourful graphic sensibility has adorned many venues, screen printed posters and t-shirts over the last few years. His work has been co-signed by none other than Drake. Garcia will be concocting another masterwork of poster design for the occasion. Our courtyard will be licensed for the occasion, weather permitting. In advance of the show, check out Radio Music Gallery, an audiovisual podcast hosted by Studiofeed.com. Our current episode explores the history and legacy of Tropiclia with guests Thom Gill (Bernice, OG Melody, Thomas) and Alex Bordokas (Uma Nota, Maracatu Mar Aberto). davidarcus.com bernice.bandcamp.com mangopeeler.ca
