Collaborative Artists Ensemble presents a revival of Southern gothic writer Carson McCullers’ rarely performed dark family drama, The Square Root of Wonderful, at Raven Playhouse. The quirky Southern family at the heart of the play suffers from an abundance of dysfunction including mental illness, infidelity and violence. Mollie Lovejoy has found a way to survive as a single mother, taking in boarders and she is even starting a new relationship with a bland, but stable new beau. When her alcoholic and mentally unsound ex-husband turns up, Mollie must choose where her future will lie. This heartbreakingly emotional play serves as a both a window into the personal life of the author herself (it was based on her real life marriage) and a window into the social climate of the 1950s, when the play was written.
