Egyptian Theatre (Hollywood, CA)
Over the years, the reputation of Vincente Minnelli, the director of Hollywood’s most extravagant musicals, has grown to the outsized dimensions of his own ambition. Few directors have been so slavishly — and successfully — attentive to style. Now the American Cinematheque is screening two of his best efforts — An American in Paris and Gigi — at the Egyptian Theatre. Winner of a Best Picture Oscar in 1951, An American in Paris features an irrepressible Gene Kelly as a struggling painter caught between the romantic overtures of a wealthy patron (Nina Foch) and his true love (Leslie Caron). Winner of the Best Picture Oscar in 1958, Gigi is a spirited adaptation of Colette’s novel about a sweet young girl (Leslie Caron again) trained by her aunt to be a courtesan in Belle Époque Paris. Don’t miss an opportunity to enjoy two glamorous movies in one of the world’s most glamorous movie palaces.
