Newfoundland and Labrador residents will wake up to witness a powerful snow storm today morning, as it has already dumped a lot of snow along with hazardous winds. Strong blizzard has already shaken the entire region, including the eastern part of the province. Initial signs of the snowstorm began showing on Thursday afternoon, which have only gotten worse so far. Almost around 20 to 30 centimetres of snow has already accumulated on the Avalon Peninsula, where St. John’s is located, though there is still a lot more to come in the coming hours.
Throughout the course of the day, blizzard is predicted to slump as much as 80 centimetres of snow, along with winds growing as much as 100 kilometres per hour. At The international airport of St. John’s, the winds have already arrived at 70 kilometres per hour on Thursday night, consequently runways are all shut down resulting in numerous flight cancellations. Officials suspect even more flights to be cancelled throughout the day. On the other hand, schools and transportation services throughout Avalon have been suspended for the day, while municipal offices and recreation facilities in St. John’s announce to keep closed for the day as well.
It has been confirmed by the provincial utility that power of thousands of residents and businesses on the Avalon has been disrupted since 6:30 a.m. NT, though it is slowly being restored in different areas. The storm has caused whiteout conditions and heavy drifting, keeping which in mind, Environment Canada has issued blowing snow warnings for areas as far west as Gander.
