A newest set of information confirms that Finance Minister Jim Flaherty is planning to keep all Canadians updated on his bid day. Flaherty will be tweeting elements of his day on Thursday, as he plans to deliver the 2013 federal budget in the House of Commons.

This is one of many social media strategies that the government has started using to communicate with people, and now it is being implemented to the new federal spending and savings plan. An “enhanced” version of live-streaming of Flaherty’s budget speech to the House of Commons will be made this year, which the department has dubbed as “speechPLUS.” It was promised that as the minister will be laying out the government’s fiscal plan, the online viewers will be prioritized with graphics and videos the department claims to provide context for the information he’s sharing with MPs. In the meantime, the department officials will be continuously posting links to those materials via its own Twitter account. The government has also extended the online versions of the budget to be compatible with even more mobile and tablet devices and included an improved search function to allow the document to be scanned quickly.

Such all-inclusive digital plan has been extended to the Finance Department for the first time, even though the officials did tweet elements of Flaherty’s speech last year and made the document online for limited mobile platforms. This development symbolizes the increasing amalgamation of social media into government communications as part of an overall strategy, rather than just an afterthought.
