The future of TikTok in the US

The fate of TikTok in the US is hanging in the balance, with the Biden administration threatening to ban the app if it is not sold by its Chinese owner. The CEO of TikTok, Shou Chew, is due to appear before Congress to defend the company’s position.

This situation is reminiscent of three years ago when former President Trump also attempted to force the Chinese tech giant to sell the app, but without success. The issue is complex, as it is part of a geopolitical power struggle between the US and China.

Chew’s main task is to prevent a nationwide ban, while also addressing concerns about the safety of American users’ data and the participation of children in dangerous challenges. TikTok’s plan, called Project Texas, which involves a subsidiary partnering with the American tech company Oracle, may not be enough to prevent a ban, with a forced sale being the ultimate solution.

However, whether this is achievable given the geopolitical tensions between the US and China is highly questionable.
