Karachi police has reportedly arrested the alleged chief of outlawed sectarian group Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ) along with illegal weapons after an encounter in Mauripur. The Special Investigation Unit (SIU) of Karachi police received confidential information during investigations and raided the Lucky Pahari area of Mauripur on Tuesday.

Militants opened fire at the sudden arrival of police officers. The encounter lasted for several hours after which Tariq Shafi Ansari, also known as Doctor, Haji and Baray Mian was arrested while his accomplices managed to flee. Police also found a hand grenade, one .44 rifle, one 8mm pistol and a TT pistol.

After the arrest of Hafiz Qasim Rasheed in 2012, Ansari became the LeJ Karachi chief while Waseem Baroodi, Zeeshan and Naseem alias Firon became his close allies. Ansari has previously remained in police custody from 2001 until 2008. He established his own group in 2008 and brutally targeted people belonging to the Shia community. Police suspects that Ansari’s group is responsible for the murders of Syed Ahsan Abbas Naqvi in Karimabad on April 3 last year; Dr Hassan Alam Zaidi in New Karachi and Mushtaq Hussain in SITE on January 22.

In the meanwhile, Crime Investigation Department (CID) claims to have arrested a sacked policeman in Karachi for allegedly having ties with the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan. Police officers accused Kamran of working with the TTP’s fund generating team. He was arrested during a raid conducted on a tip-off in Korangi Industrial Area along with a TT pistol.
