The White House has refused to comment or rather confirm the recent drone strike in North Waziristan that allegedly executed senior Taliban militant Waliur Rehman among six others while Pakistan has confirmed that a US drone fired two missiles in a village on Wednesday.
“We are not in the position to confirm the reports of Waliur Rehman’s death,” White House Press Secretary Jay Carney told the press.
President Barack Obama has recently announced new guidelines for the drone program and promised more precision and transparency. He maintained that drones are to play a vital role in the global war against terrorism. However, Carney clarified that increased transparency does not imply that comprehensive report on the program would be made available to general public.
“[More transparency] does not mean that we would be able to discuss the details of every counterterrorism operation. It does mean that there are standards in place that are public and available for every American to review,” he added.
According to Carney, the US drones have proved to be effective against terrorists in Afghanistan. He supported the drone policy that President Obama has now declared legal and effective. On the contrary, the President failed to address the concerns about unknown identities that are targeted during the strikes.
Pakistan has been condemning drone program by declaring it a direct threat to its sovereignty and violation of international law. Non-government organizations have also called the killings in U.S. drone program as extrajudicial executions.
