Environment Minister, Yves-François Blanchet, and Quebec City Mayor, Régis Labeaume, announced while talking to reporters after flying over the Chaudière River, which is connected to Lac Mégantic, on Tuesday that they are now convinced that an oil spill from the Lac-Mégantic disaster is under control. Blanchet informed reporters that “the source has been plugged,” and that “practically nothing is getting into the river.”

Providing details, the Quebec minister elucidated that upon his arrived in Lac-Mégantic on Saturday morning, he comprehended that the scene was catastrophic. He stated that “we were confronted with something that, maybe, we could not manage.” However, he added in a relaxed tone that “seventy-two hours later, we are relatively in control.” Blanchet explained that “there is no threat to public health now in the foreseeable future.” He boastfully declared that the cleanup efforts for the river were a “great success.”

Furthermore, Blanchet elaborated that while flying over the river with Labeaume, as president of the Communauté métropolitaine de Québec, he observed some traces of oil downstream in St-Georges-de-Beauce. It was explained that initially a dam linking Lac Mégantic and the river was filled up to raise the water level so flow of water in the river was reduced. He stated that “oil flows more slowly than water,” so the crew later used a system of dikes downstream from the dam and pumped contaminated water out of the river. He alleged that “we push the adversary into a corner, then we pump.”
