The Senate’s Standing Committee on Overseas Pakistanis has proposed a few incentives for Pakistani expatriates in order to award their significant role played in national economic development.

Ministry of Overseas Pakistanis Secretary Munir Qureshi told the committee on Monday that the government should stretch the insurance duration of overseas Pakistanis from two years to the time they return to Pakistan. He said it is vital to acknowledge that foreign remittances sent by overseas Pakistanis are an important part of our economic stability.

The ministry is also planning to facilitate Pakistani expatriates by providing them a pension plan after their return. Qureshi quoted that foreign remittance in fiscal year 2012-13 alone sums up to USD 14 billion. He stated that if the banking sector was more cooperative and flexible, the figures would have been multiplied. Reportedly, a large number of Pakistani expatriates are currently living in Middle East, Europe and America.

Qureshi announced that the ministry has setup 26 Community Welfare Attaches in 18 different countries. A Complaint Cell in the ministry is specifically tasked to address the grievances of overseas Pakistanis through Community Welfare Attaches.

Moreover, a Senate panel was informed about a merger of the Ministry of Overseas Pakistanis and the Ministry of Human Resource Development on Monday. The two ministries have been merged as part of the new federal government’s austerity measures.
