Major chunk of the USD 10 million Malala Fund for Girl’s Right to Education will be spent on the education of young girls in Pakistan while a significant sum is also dedicated for schooling of girls in Afghanistan.

The Fund was announced by President Asif Ali Zardari in December 2012. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Pakistan to form this fund to provide additional educational opportunities to women.

Assistant secretary general (education) Unesco, Qian Tang, met Minister of State for Education, Trainings and Standards in Higher Education Balighur Rehman on Monday. The purpose of the meeting was to chalk out an implementation plan and draft a systematic operation of the fund.

Mr Rehman suggested that the $3 million fund should be allocated for Afghan refugee girls in Pakistan. It was mutually agreed that the quality of education for girls needs to be improved. Establishment of model schools and technical and vocational training centers for girls was also discussed.

Mr Rehman emphasized that the girls living in the northern areas of Pakistan should fight for their right to education. He urged international donors to step forward and expand the fund so that more girls can benefit from improved education facilities. Mr Rehman also underlined the need to cut down operations and transactional costs so that the money can be directed to more useful areas.
