The New Jersey Governor, Chris Christie, addressed the press on Thursday and apologized for the actions of certain aides who closed lanes near the George Washington Bridge, to punish the local mayor of that area.
Emails and text messages that were revealed this Wednesday suggested that one of Christie’s top aides had engineered the traffic jams in New Jersey Town last September to apparently punish its Democratic mayor. The messages do not directly point at Christie but contradicted Christies previous statement that his staff was not involved. He said in his press conference that he was stunned by their actions and had no clue what they were up to. ‘I am stunned by the abject stupidity that was shown here regardless of what the facts ultimately uncover. This was handled in a callous and indifferent way,’ said the New Jersey Governor this Thursday.
Christie further added that he is responsible for what happens under his watch, whether it is good or bad, but had no knowledge or any kind of involvement in this scandal. ‘I knew nothing about this,’ Christie told the news conference. Christie fired his top aide, Bridget Anne Kelly, who was his deputy chief of staff for legislative and intergovernmental affairs, who he claimed, lied to him when asked about being aware of the lane closings that paralyzed the town. ‘There’s no justification for that behavior,’ said Christie referring to Kelly. He also asked Bill Stepien to remove his name from the consideration as leader of the state’s Republican Party
