How ironic that a show famous for a song named “Tradition” should be so ground-breaking. But never before (or since) has a musical been as sweeping or so insanely entertaining as Fiddler on the Roof, winner of nine Tony Awards and prime candidate for greatest Broadway musical of all time. Fiddler follows the life of Tevye, a poor dairyman in a small village in czarist Russia. Teyve attempts to honor the Jewish religious customs of his ancestors, but dangerous forces threaten the village’s ancient way of life. It’s Teyve’s faith and deep love for his family that give him the strength to fight on, even as the world changes around him. The Riverside Repertory Theater’s production of this musical is filled with such favorites as “If I Were a Rich Man,” “Matchmaker, Matchmaker,” “Tradition” and “Sunrise, Sunset” performed by a live orchestra. You’ll also get a unique chance to experience this non-traditional approach to the show in an intimate space where you can really feel close to the characters.
