Calgary Police have announced to have issued an Amber Alert for five-year-old Nathan O’Brien and his grandparents, Kathryn and Alvin Liknes, who seemed to have disappeared under suspicious circumstances. The boy was staying with his maternal grandparents at their southwest Calgary home overnight Sunday but when his mother returned to collect him on Monday morning, nobody was at home.

According to Calgary police spokesman Kevin Brookwell, the grandparents are not considered suspects in their grandson’s disappearance but in fact the investigation is being treated as a “suspicious disappearance of all three.” Brookwell said that police found that “the home was not in the condition that typically it would have been left in” and so it is being assumed that the homeowners “did not leave on their own volition.” Moreover, vehicles of all family members, including that of the grandparents, are accounted for.

Brookwell explained that “we have no information to go on at this time, and that’s the reason we’re reaching out to the public,” and added that “if they heard or saw anything during the night that was suspicious, to let us know as soon as possible.” According to their neighbours, Alvin and Kathy Liknes, the family was planning to leave Calgary. Another neighbor, Jennifer Lee, alleged that they were “really nice people, absolutely” and “they were just on their way moving to northern Alberta, I understand.” Meanwhile, Matt Dawe claimed that “they seemed very relaxed and happy” as “they were socializing with friends and family earlier on Saturday evening. Everybody sounded very relaxed and happy.”
