Main Gallery :KINSHIP :Is An Artists Blind Date

A curated Exhibition August 6-17 2014

This exhibit is not your typical algorithm—KINSHIP pairs artists of

disparate disciplines together to disrupt conventions and patterns of

each other’s typical practice. From painters to poets, illustrators to

sculptors, filmmakers to designers, this social exhibit encourages

spontaneity,

story-telling and little bit of the usual blind date awkwardness.

The act of listening is an intangible exchange—something that we take

for granted but can also be seen as an unguarded transaction of

emotions. Kinship will establish the space and circumstance for sixteen

artists to unite in a common challenge: a chance to accept change that

results from the actions of others and relinquish feelings of control to

foster an open community. The expectation is for strangers of a variety

of disciplines and backgrounds to establish a rapport through a brief

encounter, providing a context that inspires both parties to create.

The Parkdale Beauty Pageant Society is a rotating collective of

Parkdale-engaged artists, curators and arts administrators. We work in

tandem with our community partners to organize and promote the many film

and video artists who live, work, and reflect the eclectic Village of

Parkdale through an annual summer festival, the Parkdale Film + Video

Showcase (formerly REHAB).

We also do special off-site partnerships, media arts workshops and other

programming throughout the year.

In 2013, our workshops were co-presented with the Toronto Animated Image

Society. Artists Lynn Dana Wilton and Evan DeRushie taught students to

do complete short stop motion animated sequences in the Parkdale Branch

of the Toronto Public Library.

We're please to present some of the results of those workshops from

budding young filmmakers!
