London Luton Airport has been evacuated from passengers and incoming flights have been suspended following the discovery of a suspicious package in the security search area on Monday afternoon.
The airport has also confirmed that the terminal building was evacuated from passengers due to a security alert while the approach road to the airport has also been closed after security alert.
Airport have issued a statement on its website after the incident that the decision to clear the airport was made in cooperation “with the police to ensure the safety and security of passengers and staff.
It also says: “We understand passengers will be frustrated by the delays they are experiencing. We are working closely with the police to ensure passengers are not inconvenienced unnecessarily but we must ensure that the safety and security of all our passengers and staff remains our top priority.
“We are advising passengers to contact their airlines for information about specific flights and will provide a further update as soon as we are able.”
The bomb disposal squad have been called that deployed a robot to investigate the package and carried out a controlled explosion on the item after inspecting it for not presenting a wider threat.
Bedfordshire Police have said: “We can confirm that controlled explosion has taken place at Luton Airport. Item is safe. Airport opening soon but there will be delays.”
Last week, Britain had raised its terrorism threat alert to its second-highest level of “severe”, implying an attack is “highly likely” amid the concerns of U.K.’s greatest-ever security threat posed by Islamic State (IS) in Syria and Iraq.
