Calgary Police has confirmed to have found the remains of a missing Calgary hunter who died suffering a grizzly bear attack in Kananaskis Country. The victim was hunting near the Picklejar Creek Trail on Saturday morning, but failed to return home that evening as expected and so the family reported him missing to police on Sunday morning. The unnamed victim was found dead by search teams on Monday.
According to the details provided by Const. Virgil Bitz, of the Kananaskis RCMP, “during the search today, we discovered his remains,” and added that “he sustained severe trauma from a grizzly bear attack.” Thereafter, the victim’s family was updated in Calgary. Whereas, the RCMP believes there are two possible reasons for what’s being called a defensive attack by the bear. Bitz explained that “it’s the time of year when bears start getting anxious about getting enough food for winter, so they are a little more protective of their food sources. There was a freshly killed deer cache in the vicinity.”
Furthermore, Bitz explained that “there was a cub as well. Surprising a mom bear with a cub is one trigger for an attack and getting too close to a food source is another, so it’s kind of a double whammy there. He was in the wrong place at the wrong time.” A spokeswoman for Alberta Tourism, Parks and Recreation in Canmore, Jill Sawyer, which also aided in the search mission, alleged that “we had conservation officers and public safety officers out there.”
