Have you ever wished for an opportunity to dance, minus the judgment, minus the alcohol, minus the awkward-dance-circles, minus zumba, minus the obligation to dance with others, minus skin-tight-spandex, minus the uninvited grinding, minus the pretentious playlists, minus the lights?

No Lights No Lycra Toronto is a weekly dance jam in the dark for the joy of dancing.

It’s your opportunity to dance no matter your age, size or ability. It’s your opportunity to dance like no one is watching, because no one is.

And next month, we’re turning one. Which means we’re going to dance in the dark like always, but longer and harder. If you’re an NLNL regular, you won’t want to miss out. And if you’ve never been before, this is your opportunity to join in the lights-off dance party joy.

Tickets are limited (we want everyone to have ample space to bust moves), so get in quick!

We deeply regret that the space is not accessible by wheelchair. We hunted high and low, without luck, and would love to hear from you if you know of an appropriate accessible space that is available in the new year.

What is NLNL? It’s a few things.

– It’s a place for people to come and dance freely in a friendly, non-threatening, drug and alcohol free atmosphere.

– It’s a place where you’ll hear anything from 80’s pop, to swing, to tribal drumming, and everything in between.

-It’s held in a dark room so that you can bust out whatever moves you like, with out the worry of anyone watching.

– it’s a time to dance independently in the company of others – in order for people to truly lose themselves in the music it is important to keep talking to a minimum.

– it’s not about technique and being a ‘good’ dancer, it’s about the experience of dancing with no one watching and the joy that this brings.

– it’s a place to exercise at your own pace while having fun.

– it promotes a healthy mind and a healthy body.

– it’s about making dance accessible for everyone.

– it’s an inclusive event – open to all ages, genders, backgrounds and demographics.

-it’s a place to shake out the stresses of the week, let go of your inhibitions and completely be yourself.

The No Lights No Lycra movement started in Melbourne, and is now packed to the brim in Chicago, NY, Vancouver, Christchurch, Sydney, London, Los Angeles and more.

No Lights No Lycra is an dance community that started in Melbourne by unruly dance students Alice Glenn and Heidi Barrett in 2009. There is no light, no lycra, no teacher, no steps to learn, no technique, just free movement. NLNL is a space where you can completely let go, shake out the stresses of the week, and lose yourself in the music and the physicality of your body. NLNL is a daggy, non-pretentious place to completely be yourself.
