Ontario Education Minister, Liz Sandals, has mentioned in her remarks on Thursday that Canada’s largest school board’s mismanagement and inefficiencies are getting “dangerously close” to the classroom. She alleged to be afraid that they are directly threatening to hurt teacher morale and undermine student achievement.

These comments were made in response to a report by government-appointed consultant, Margaret Wilson, which highlighted a long list of problems at the Toronto District School Board. According to the extended report, the issues at TDSB include but are not limited to lax governance that allowed a former chair to pursue “pet projects” unilaterally, trustees routinely interfering in day-to-day operations, micromanaging by the board’s top-ranking staffer and fears among many employees that their e-mails and telephone calls being monitored. The report by education consultant, Margaret Wilson, points out that the ability of teachers to concentrate on the well-being and progress of 247,000 elementary and secondary students is being hampered in the meanwhile.

Furthermore, Ms. Sandals elucidated that Ontario government have appointed a supervisor to take over the school board’s operations whenever it is running a deficit. However, she warned that supervision will have to be considered eventually if the board does not make changes, giving it one month to respond. Acknowledging content of the report, Ms. Sandals alleged that “the culture of fear, which may have started at the upper levels of the board, is getting dangerously close to the classroom” and “We have to stop that.”
