The government of Ontario have announced sweeping chances to the care guidelines for marine animals in the province. According to the new standards of care for whales, dolphins, seals, and other marine mammals, Ontario has banned the acquisition and breeding of killer whales in captivity.

Executive director of a national animal protection society Zoocheck Canada, Rob Laidlaw, alleged that “the legislation is the nail in the coffin of that particular practice.” Laidlaw stated that “it’s a very significant move, and will serve as precedent for other jurisdictions in Canada and other countries. Though to some extent it is symbolic.” The only killer whale in captivity in Ontario, which resides in Marineland, was charged with mistreatment of its mammals in 2012. At the time, Marineland mentioned in an official stated that “we have always, and will always live up to the highest, achievable, science-based standards in the world.” It stated that “Marineland, therefore, welcomes and fully support the express recommendation of the Expert Panel’s report released today.”

These new guidelines were revealed through a government-commissioned report from a Marine Biologist at the University of British Columbia, David Rosen. The report also recommended to make “a provincial inventory of marine mammals housed in display facilities.” Additionally, it calls for facilities to have access to “a qualified veterinarian with expertise in marine mammal medicine,” and “minimum space requirements that are based upon established, internationally recognized codes.” The report notes that there are currently no established regulations for pool sizes in Canada.
