An ingenious adaptation of Bizet’s passionate opera by South Africa’s Isango Ensemble, uCarmen gives this fiery story of romance and revenge a supernatural twist. This new take, now coming to Santa Monica’s Broad Stage, is based on the acclaimed 2005 South African film, U-Carmen eKhayelitsha, which finds the beautiful but hot-tempered main character drawing her police sergeant lover into trouble, and ultimately into an act of deadly jealousy. The score combines traditional African rhythms with music from the original opera, famed for its instantly recognizable “Habanera” aria.
