Authorities have confirmed that the 10-year-old victim of a colossal crash on Hwy. 401, near Whitby on Friday night, has now become the fourth person to have died from the accident. The news was confirmed by OPP Const. Kerry Schmidt on Monday, whereas the boy died in the hospital on Sunday. Others killed in the crash included the boy’s 12-year-old brother, a man and a woman in another vehicle. Schmidt added that “there are four more people in hospital, one is in critical condition.”

The incident took place at about 10:30 p.m. Friday on Hwy. 401 west of Brock St, when a tractor-trailer entered in a construction zone and smashed into a number of vehicles. This triggered a chain reaction involving 20 vehicles and resulting in five people injured critically. Additionally, 11 more suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Police has yet to determine if any charges will be laid. Talking about warning signs available for drivers at the scene, Schmidt stated that “my understanding is the standards were there,” adding that “but that’s being looked at in terms of sufficiency in the investigation. If that contributed, if there was enough warning. Certainly, a bend in the road surprising motorists is something we’re looking at right now.”

Whereas on the other hand, OPP has released names of two men who were killed in a similar multi-vehicle wreck on the 401 in Ajax. 62-year-old Allan Banks and 56-year-old Lewis Dennis Dezsi died in the crash involving two transport trucks and six vehicles. The accident took place in the eastbound lanes at Harwood Ave. around 6 a.m.
