Officials have confirmed that a confrontation between Hamilton Police and an assault suspect has resulted in the latter’s death on Friday. According to the information provided by the province’s Special Investigations Unit, a Hamilton cop fatally shot a 36-year-old man and it is now going to investigate the shooting in accordance with its mandate.
The details of the incident made available by the SIU so far reveal that the Hamilton Police responded to a report of an assault by a man with a gun at a bar on the corner of King William St. and Catharine St. N. around 11 p.m. Upon their arrival, the police officers identified the suspect allegedly involved in the assault when “the man was walking in the middle of James Street near the GO Station.” The SIU’s statement mentioned that “there was an interaction and the officer discharged his firearm. The 36-year-old man was struck. He was rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead.” The authorities have so far refrained from revealing the man’s identity.
The SIU has alleged that “the SIU has designated one subject officer and eight witness officers in this investigation,” adding that “seven investigators and three forensic investigators have been assigned to investigate this incident.” In a statement, Hamilton Police said “the area was immediately secured to preserve evidence as part of the now ongoing investigation by the SIU.” Police also stressed any further information about the case would come from the SIU.
