In a statement, UNOCHA says that despite a decrease in the population of people affected, the situation could increase and therefore more efforts are still needed to manage the matter.

Humanitarian agencies are giving assistance to at least 170,000 Sudanese refugees in the Greater Upper Nile region and more refugees are expected to arrive in the country when rains stop.

Thousands of South Sudanese residents have also been affected with heavy flooding that hit the country in the previous weeks. Most areas affected areas are in Jonglei, Lakes, Northern Bahr el Ghazal, Unity and Upper Nile states.

In Jonglei at least 125,000 people have been displaced by heavy rains.

The affected displaced population lack basic services such as household items, shelter, food, water, sanitation and hygiene.

Meanwhile, the UN said that logistical challenges’ including transportation is affecting the operations of the humanitarian agencies.

Agencies have resorted to use helicopters to airdrop items to areas that have become impassable by road. However, the two helicopters not able to reach all the affected victims.

According to the UNOCHA report, insecurity is one of the contributing factors to the situation in the country.

At least 4,500 people have been displaced from Likuangole town and are scattered in settlements along the river toward Pibor following clashes between the SPLA and the David Yau Yau militia in Jonglei State.

The UN early this month warned the Sudanese government and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM-N) rebels to resolve their differences and end the war which has affected Blue Nile and Southern Kordofan states due to influx of more refugees.
