Caribbean T20 winners Trinidad & Tobago will take on SLPL T20 winners Uva Next in match five of the Karbonn Champions League Twenty20 2012 Qualifiers at the New Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg.
Both teams will be playing for nothing but pride since they were already eliminated from the race for progressing to the main event after both have lost their respective games to Yorkshire. However, expect a contest because both teams have some exciting players to bring on some thrill.
In a format where batsmen consider bowlers non-entities, two bowlers have been impressive consistently; Trinidad & Tobago’s unorthodox leg-spinner Samuel Badree and the medium-pacer Ravi Rampaul. Both bowlers were outstanding in the ICC World T20 recently and were impressive in the match against Yorkshire. Expect them to deliver the goods yet again.
Adrian Barath failed to perform against Yorkshire, but the youngster has a lot of potential. In conditions where the bounce is consistent and batsmen can play their shots, one hopes Barath can pull out a special performance and lead his team towards victory.
In the Uva Next line-up, Dilshan Munaweera and Umar Gul should be the standout performers in the batting and bowling disciplines respectively. The 23-year-old Munaweera starred with both bat and ball in the match against Yorkshire, and similar performances will do his fast-growing reputation no harm. Umar Gul had a mixed outing against Yorkshire, and he will be hoping to make amends for that with a good showing in this game.
The team is also rich in experience and that could come in handy in handling tricky situations one is likely to encounter in Twenty20 cricket. Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Dilhara Fernando, Jacob Oram, Andrew McDonald and skipper Thilina Kandamby have all been around for long, and their experience could serve their team well in tricky situations.
