On the opening day of the third and final test match, AB de Villiers and Hashim Amla played big innings of 90s after South Africa faced an early trouble against Pakistan on Friday. De Villiers and Vernon Philander remained unbeaten on 98 and 45 respectively as South Africa reached 334 for six at stumps.
Graeme Smith (5) after winning the toss and choosing to bat and Alviro Petersen (10) struggled as Pakistan’s bowlers used the seamer-friendly conditions to their advantage inside the first hour to leave the hosts on 38-2.
Petersen’s misery continued when he was trapped plum lbw by Rahat Ali. The debutant Ehsan Adil took his first test wicket after trapping Smith to be caught by Younus Khan at second slip.
Faf du Plessis (29) played a quick inning by scoring against Adil, who took the revenge after trapping him to get caught behind to end the 69-run partnership between Amla and Du Plessis.
Afterwards, De Villiers put on 79 with Amla before the latter fell just eight short of century as he attempted to cut a wide delivery from Rahat and got a faint edge through to Sarfraz.
Shortly afterwards Dean Elgar (7) was trapped lbw by Rahat and Robin Peterson(28) was run out by a direct hit from Mohammad Irfan.
Rahat remains a successful pick for Pakistan as he collected three for 95. However, the touruists lost Adil late in the day with a leg injury after he had bowled the opening delivery of a new spell.
South Africa is leading the three-match series with 2-0 having won the first test in Johannesburg by 211 runs, before completing the series win with a four-wicket victory in Cape Town.
