The Juvenile Justice Board is expected to announce the fate of a juvenile named in the December 16 gang-rape case tomorrow. After completing its inquiry on July 5, the Board had reserved its judgment after hearing final arguments from both sides.

The December 16 gang-rape case which led to the death of a paramedic student in a Singapore hospital broke outrage in the country and beyond borders. The young girl and her friend were abused in a moving bus in Delhi. The juvenile along with five adults were arrested in the case which drew attention of human rights activists and international media towards the security of women in India.

The young suspect belongs to Uttar Pradesh and moved to Delhi at the age of 11. He took up menial jobs to support himself. According to the police, he was the most brutal of all the sex accused in the rape case. He is also been tried for another case pertaining to robbing a man who had boarded the bus on the same night.

One of the adults accused in the case was found hanging in Tihar Jail in March while the other four – Mukesh, Pawan Gupta, Vinay Sharma and Akshay Thakur – are being tried before a fast track court. The juvenile, who was 17-year-old at the time of the crime, faces a maximum sentence of three years in a correctional facility if found guilty.
