In a latest set of warnings issued by The Transportation Safety Board of Canada, it has forwarded a pair of urgent and high priority safety advisories to Transport Canada in result of the investigation into the devastating calamity that consumed majority of Lac-Mégantic after a train derailment caused explosions and massive fire.
Even though the investigation is still underway, TSB has issued two advisory notices that highlight to improve the security of equipment and trains that are left unattended. The TSB investigation has so far revealed that the breaking force applied at the time of incident to the 72 car train was inadequate according to the 1.2 per cent descending slope where it had been parked for the night. The agency advised Transport Canada to review the Canadian Rail Operating Rules that handle the security of equipment, along with the special instructions by railways to further safeguard against runaway trains. Secondly, the ongoing investigation advised that the rules regarding the security of trains carrying dangerous goods shall also be revisited. TSB has requested the regulatory body to review all operating procedures in order to make sure that trains carrying dangerous goods are not left unattended on a main track.
The identity of another five victims of the blast was released by the authorities on Friday, which totals the number of dead bodies recovered from the scene in the core of the town up to 42. Meanwhile, eight more victims are still missing from the scene and are already presumed dead.
