During the Salmon Express II event that took place at Lake Ontario on Thursday, Toronto Mayor Rob Ford skillfully managed to prevent an embarrassing fall of his Mississauga counterpart, Mayor Hazel McCallion, into the water while both were fishing together. Speaking about the abruptness of the incident and his impromptu rescue that saved the day, Mayor Ford confessed that “everybody was pretty shocked. She was almost right in the lake.”

Both Mayor Ford and Mayor McCallion were fishing at the Salmon Express II when the Mississauga mayor suddenly got jolted into the lake by a jerky dive of a 16-pound salmon. Explaining the incident from his prospective, Mayor Ford alleged that “it was close. When a big fish hits you and it goes down it jolts you, and I guess she wasn’t balanced and she almost went overboard … Glad that didn’t happen.” On the other hand, 92-year-old Mayor McCallion described the incident, explaining that “I lost my footing because that line just bent as far as it could bend,” elaborating that “I couldn’t stand on my two feet, so I lunged forward of course, and Rob Ford was standing right behind me — all the men were — and he just grabbed me, thank goodness.”

Later on, joking about the incident, Ford attributed his quick reaction to have caught up due to his football instincts, though at the same time, he acknowledged that the situation could have been very serious. He mentioned that “I’m glad she didn’t go in cause we all would have been swimming and that water’s cold.”
