American Museum of Ceramic Art: Mata Ortiz Pottery Demo With Diego Valles

Your visit to the American Museum of Ceramic Art — a hidden gem of the local art scene — will be like strolling through time and across continents as you discover amazing pottery, tools, sculptures and everything in between. But the highlight of your trip on these dates will be the special Mata Ortiz pottery sale and hands-on demo by artist Diego Valles — possibly the only professional ceramist you’ll ever meet who also has a degree in electromechanical engineering. The Mata Ortiz style of pottery, named for the Mexican town where it originated, involves coiling, pinching and handmaking the vessels (without a potter’s wheel) using only local clays and simple everyday tools like a spoon, a lid or a strand of hair. They’re then hand-painted with what Valles calls “sensual symmetrical lines.” As an artist at the forefront of this style, Valles draws upon Mata Ortiz traditions as well as his engineering degree and his own experiences to create unique sculptures filled with movement and emotion.
