Liberal Senator Romeo Dallaire, known for leading an ill-fated UN mission in Rwanda during the 1994 genocide, has announced his decision to resign from the Senate because of international humanitarian demands. While making the announcement, Dallaire alleged that “I feel I have done my job here and I feel I have another job that is growing in importance.”
Dallaire clarified in his announcement that his decision was not triggered by depression, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) caused by his experience in the Rwanda genocide or his frustration with the Senate. He said that “no, the PTSD was not a factor in my resignation. I am leaving one job because I have a more demanding job.” Dallaire described his work with child soldiers, investigating crimes against humanity and working with international institutes on preventing genocide. Talking about himself, Dallaire alleged that he was in his 14th year of therapy, and added that “I take my 19 pills a day. I live one day at a time.”
In his remarks about the Senate, Dallaire alleged that the Upper Chamber “is in a transitional scenario” much different from when he arrived in 2005. Dallaire said that senators are “recognizing that internal reform is required.” He added that “there is no doubt in my military mind that this country needs that second chamber and that the senators need to be appointed by the prime minister.” Dallaire further clarified that senate spending scandal was also not a factor in his decision.
