Sea shanties aren’t just for ancient mariners or lonesome pirates anymore. John Kraus, a founding member of Trip the Spring and front man for Bodie, finds new uses for these salty old songs with his latest group, the uber-talented John Kraus & the Goers. A licensed ship captain, Kraus has long been incorporating sea shanties into his performances, even as he infused them with his love of Celtic and bluegrass music. The resulting sound is “a meet up of the Pogues and the Decemberists on the high seas.” So set sail for the Grand Annex and hear the band play their brooding ballads and rockin’ tunes live.
